Astrological CyclesTrading with the MoonTrading the Moons, which can be done with amazing success at times, is not about statistics which don't tell the whole picture because of inversions which actually make the stattistics weaker and less significant than they really are. You can buy Full Moons and sell New Moons, just like you can buy in November and sell in May using the seasonal statistics, and greatly increase your buy and hold profits in both cases as seen in the graphs below. More information can be found in an interesting study of the effects of the Moon on Markets of the G7 group. However looking at the Moons closer using a line chart to accentuate the turning points, we see that they are quite accurate and profitable especially in an emotional market. Over the last 9 months they inverted 7/9 times or about 44% of the time, but such inversions can be detected as they occur with regular techinical analysis tools to determine chnages in direction and momentum.

Charts courtesy of StockCharts.com Cardinal Dates, Moon Cycles and Financial PanicsChris Carolan's work has shown that Financial Panics occur most frequently near the first New Moon Cycle after the Fall Equinox, but also near other Cardinal Dates like the Spring Equinox, Winter and Summer Solstices. The Fall and Winter Solstices see Panics near the first New Moon, while the Spring and Summer Solstices sees them near the first and second Full Moon at times. Over the last eight largest daily declines we have 3 in the Fall, 2 each in Spring and Summer and one in Winter. The August 98 was in between, but with the lows near Full Moons I felt it belonged more with the Summer Solstice. While Financial Panics are quite rare, large declines are more common and it is always wise to be aware of the Moon Cycles near the four Cardinal Dates each year.![]() Charts courtesy of StockCharts.com Venus - Saturn AspectsCharts courtesy of StockCharts.com Venus AspectsCharts courtesy of StockCharts.com Venus CyclesCharts courtesy of StockCharts.com Heavenly returnsI have plotted the orbits of the 3 large planets over the last 100 years. Note that peaks and throughs have marked some very important turns like in 1932, 1949, 1973, 1999 and to a minor extent even 2003. The next potentially significant dates are in 2009 and 2017. ![]() ![]() Uranus-Pluto AspectsThese aspects have different periods due to the elliptical path of orbits. Uranus is generally considered a difficult planet in Square aspects, and the ones to Pluto coincide with difficult periods worlwide and its effect shows up with marked lows in the US markets. The Opposition and Conjunction aspects appear to have a corresponding positive effect but not as marked and precise as the Squares. This pattern is in agreement with other long-term secular and cyclical studies, pointing to 2012 as a difficult period.
Bradley Planetary modelDonald Bradley designed this model in 1948. It is the sum of planetary aspects and the declinations of Venus and Mars. Aspects are assigned positive and negative weights, but the declinations of Mars and Venus have the most effect. At times this model tracks the market quite well but inversions are common and the magnitude is not predictable. It is best at predicting major turning points, sometimes accurate in the direction and rarely in the magnitude. The table below is from Bradley's model and list the positive and negative conjunctions (planets within 0-15 degrees of each other. According to his work the large planets are not positive when near in the sky, while Mars is negative with every other planet. The smaller planets are positive with just about every other planet especially Venus who is positive with every one except Mars.
Venus RetrogradesThe orbit of Venus is 225 days or a Fibonnaci 0.616 of the Earth's orbit and Venus overtakes the Earth about every 19 months as it races around the Sun. This behavior is seen from the Earth as an apparent backward movement of Venus called a retrograde period. Most of these retrograde dates coincide with turns in the market of varying significance, the most noteworthy being the exact low of the 2000-2002 bear market on October 10, 2002. Over the last 16 Venus retrograde periods, only the 1987 and 1991 dates were difficult and not very profitable. Five of the retrograde periods were exact matches for the highs and lows in May 2004, October 2002, October 1995, March 1993, and May 1988, while nine others were close matches and profitable. 2007 and 2009 Venus RetrogradesThis Venus retorgrade period is acting a lot like 1999, and we must watch the September 8th date for a possible significant turn date, and possibly a high like in 1999.
